Cloud Preschool Students “Break In” New Playground

Cloud Preschool students officially opened their brand-new playground on Wednesday morning with a celebration that was as joyful as it was memorable.
Families, staff, district leaders, and community members gathered on campus to mark the completion of the newly renovated play space designed especially for the District’s youngest learners. Speakers included Child Development & Child Care Director Deidre Corwin, Glendale Unified Board of Education President Ingrid Gunnell, and Superintendent Dr. Darneika Watson, who shared remarks about the importance of creating safe, engaging spaces where young children of all abilities can safely explore, learn, and grow.
“Spaces like this playground aren’t just for fun; they’re where friendships begin, confidence grows, and important early skills take shape,” said Board President, Ingrid Gunnell.
But the highlight of the morning belonged to the students themselves.
Instead of a traditional ribbon cutting, Cloud’s preschoolers helped officially open their new playground by bursting through a colorful paper ribbon decorated with their own handprints. With cheers from the crowd, the children tore through the banner and onto the play structure, eager to play in their new space.

The approximately 45-by-22-foot playground was designed specifically for children ages two to five and includes multiple slides, climbing elements, and interactive play panels that encourage imagination and active movement. A key feature of the renovation is new shade coverage, allowing students to play more comfortably and safely throughout the year.
The upgrades were made possible through California State Preschool American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds administered through GUSD’s Child Development & Child Care Department.
Moments after the ribbon burst open, the playground was filled with laughter as students climbed, slid, and explored their new space — a fitting start for a playground built just for them. An unofficial poll of the preschoolers suggested a clear crowd favorite: the double slide.
