GUSD Elementary Schools Celebrate Walk to School Day

On Wednesday, October 7, Glendale Unified elementary schools participated in National Walk to School Day, with students and families walking to campus together to promote healthy physical activity habits, pedestrian safety, and environmentally friendly transportation. Across the district, GUSD leadership, staff, and community partners, including the Glendale Police and Fire Departments, and representatives from the City of Glendale joined the celebration. Students brought plenty of school spirit to their morning walks with homemade signs and colorful school spirit wear.
At this year’s media host school, Fremont Elementary, students walked from Montrose Community park to campus and were welcomed upon their arrival by Crescenta Valley High School cheerleaders and band, with music and cheers heard throughout the neighborhood. Once on campus, students walked a few victory laps around the blacktop with Superintendent Darneika Watson and Principal Vickie Atikikian cheering them on. There was no better way to get everyone moving and enjoy a beautiful sunny day!
Following the Walk to School Day celebration, many in the walking party continued on across the street to the City of Glendale’s celebration of the completion of the La Crescenta Avenue Rehabilitation Project near Fremont Elementary, which includes pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements along La Crescenta Avenue. The celebration featured city officials and residents, along with Fremont sixth-grade Student Council members who helped cut the official ribbon for the project at the Sparr Heights Community Center.
Together, the celebrations highlighted the value of making walking and biking part of everyday life and the importance of welcoming routes that help students and families stay active and connected to their community.
