Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about magnet school eligibility, applications, enrollment, and residency.

  • What are GUSD elementary magnet schools?
Magnet schools offer theme-based programs in academically rich and culturally diverse learning environments.

    Who can apply?
Students eligible for enrollment in GUSD may apply. Students living outside GUSD may also apply but must provide a release from their district and an inter-district permit if selected.

Do current magnet students need to reapply?
No. Students already enrolled in a magnet school do not need to reapply to remain in the program.

Do siblings or GUSD residents receive priority?
Yes. Siblings of current students may receive priority, and in-district applicants are prioritized over out-of-district applicants.

Do I need to attend a school tour?
Tours are strongly encouraged. If selected for a school you did not tour, you may be asked to complete a tour before enrollment is finalized.

    How do I apply?
Applications must be submitted online during the application window. Only eligible applications submitted by the deadline are included in the lottery.

    What happens after I apply?
Eligible applicants are entered into a random lottery. Families are notified after the lottery, and accepted students must complete the enrollment packet within three weeks.

What if I miss the deadline or do not complete enrollment?
Late applications are not included in the lottery. If the enrollment packet is not completed within three weeks, the offer is forfeited and the spot is offered to the next student on the waiting list.

How long does the waiting list stay active?
Waiting lists remain active through September 30.

    Is transportation provided?
No. Transportation is not provided to GUSD schools.

What if my child is not accepted?
You can use the GUSD Street Finder to determine your child’s home school.

What if my family moves outside GUSD after enrollment?
Students not enrolled in a FLAG dual immersion program must reapply, and readmission depends on space availability.
