Letters of Recommendation

Admissions offices, potential employers, and scholarship selection committees use recommendation letters to gain insight into applicants' strengths, weaknesses, and accomplishments.

Recommendation Letter Tips

  • Choose the people who know you best – A teacher, counselor, coach, or mentor will write the strongest letter for you.
  • Ask early – give your recommender at least three weeks to complete your letter. Remember, counselors and teachers may receive hundreds of requests each year!
  • Provide materials – application information, a copy of your application essays, and a description of your qualifications will help your recommender write an excellent letter.
  • Write out all submission instructions and deadlines
  • Send a thank you note!
